The DHS varsity football team’s final game of the season ended in a loss to the Monterey Trail Mustangs on Friday evening. Despite effective plays from Davis’s wide receivers and running backs, the strong Monterey Trail offense was able to lead its team to a 27-14 win.

The Monterey Trail athletes scored 20 of their 27 points in the final quarter of the game. Jeffrey Malm-Annan, Trey Flury, and Lorenzo Hawkins each scored a touchdown close to the end of the game, while Elijah McGolthin scored early in the second quarter.

Davis linebacker Corey Nelson prevented the Mustangs from scoring twice in the second quarter when he caused a fumble towards the end of the first half. The Davis team recovered the ball in the end zone, allowing the DHS offense to make their way down the field. The team scored during this drive with a pass caught by linebacker and wide receiver Grant Dickerson.

Davis’s second touchdown came from a pass by senior quarterback Shayne Reagan to Nelson late in the fourth quarter.

Many of the yard gains throughout the game were made by running back Winfred Roberson, one of the few sophomores on the varsity team. His many rushing plays greatly contributed to the points DHS earned.

Though Roberson is upset about the loss, he showed a positive attitude about the quality of Davis’s team this past season. “We played good, we played strong,” he said. Of course, he is also optimistic about his next two seasons on the varsity team.

“It’s hard to come in as a sophomore,” said Davis varsity coach about Roberson’s achievements. “[But] he’s a very, very good football player.”

Despite their loss, the Blue Devils showed improvement since the last time they went head-to-head with the Mustangs. According to Smyte, Monterey Trail beat Davis by over 40 points last year.

Smyte is proud of his team, and thinks that this game against the hard-to-beat Mustangs was a fair way to end the season. “Our guys showed a lot of heart tonight,” he said.
