The junior varsity men’s basketball team led DHS to victory Thursday night, defeating the Vintage High School J.V. team 89 to 77, and advancing to the winner’s bracket of the Les Curry Invitational (LCI) Tournament.
According to the J.V. men’s basketball head coach, Bob Silva, “Our season has gone well thus far with a record of 5-1. We are averaging 85 points per game and play an up-tempo exciting style of basketball.”
This was evident as players Benjamin Crook, Brandon Strong, and CK Hicks earned the team some extra points through free throws, and players Matt Michael and Strong had easy baskets with skillful layups.
“We did awesome…We stayed focused and worked well together,” said Crook, a sophomore guard for the Blue Devils.
The team worked as one, making many good passes and staying completely concentrated on the task at hand – winning the game and proceeding in the LCI Tournament.
According to Silva, the Blue Devils will now play against the better teams in the tournament and then have a chance to win first, second, or third place.
However, the team did not play flawlessly. According to Brett Bloomfield, a sophomore guard, the team’s weaknesses on Thursday were their turnovers and making a few bad throws.
Nevertheless, the Blue Devils still came up on top. They took the lead right after tip off, and the team scored a three-pointer in the first two minutes.
The J.V. team built a lead of nine points by the first quarter, 19 points in the second quarter, 16 points in the third quarter, and then ended the game with a 12 point lead. All in all, it was a productive night for the victorious Blue Devils.
