Local Christmas spirit could win DJUSD $100,000
Christmas has passed, but the spirit of giving still lingers. A Davis house is a contender in local news source Patch’s Deck the House contest to win $100,000 for the school district.
The Powell household in Wildhorse’s Candy Cane Court was nominated as one of the 24 Deck the House Finalists. This Christmas was Candy Cane Court’s ninth consecutive season lighting up their neighborhood. Kristy Powell, who spearheads the holiday decorating, says that it is a perfect way to commemorate the tradition.
“It’s nice because it is a tribute to our street, because it highlights what we’ve been doing for nine years. Some of the comments on the site talk about the food drive we do,” Powell said. “I think the coolest thing is that Candy Cane Court is getting some recognition for the good that we’ve done.”
Powell decided to submit her house for the competition after reading an editorial in the Davis Enterprise, written by the Davis Patch, saying that houses on Candy Cane Court should apply.
“I sent a picture in and completely forgot about it. It was a let’s give it a try and see what happens sort of thing. Then we got the email saying we were a finalist,” Powell said.
The voting for the winner goes until Jan. 8 and a new vote can be submitted every day. As of Jan. 2 the Powell’s house was in the lead with almost 3,000 votes. The house in second trailed behind at a little more than 1,000 votes.
