DHS men’s lacrosse team makes history with an 8-7 win
On May 1, 2012, DHS made history. Not the type of history that is earns a place in The Guinness World Record book but instead the type of history that makes the DHS men’s lacrosse team a “force to be reckoned with”. For the first time ever, the men’s varsity lacrosse team had an undefeated season consisting of 18 wins and zero loses.
This game in which DHS came out victorious was no walk in the park. League rival, Piedmont, made the Blue Devils work for their 8-7 win.
Now that the last regular season game has been won, the lacrosse team has earned home field advantage due to their number one ranking going into the playoffs.
During the first three quarters of the game, DHS gathered tallies from six different players and maintained at least a one goal lead. It was not until final quarter that the drama dawned.
“It shouldn’t have been as close as it was” said sophomore Kian Reno, who scored the sixth goal for the Blue Devils.
Four minutes into fourth quarter, Piedmont found the back of the net to tie the game at six each. Three minutes later they scored again to find themselves up by one.
During a time-out after the Piedmont goal, head coach Nick Juri told his team to keep moving the ball and work as a team while emphasizing that the team play “their game”.
“At no moment did I think we were not going to win,” Juri said.
With four minutes remaining, Daniel Rowen made a much needed goal to keep the Blue Devils in the game. Suddenly, 30 seconds after Rowen’s goal, Klenzendorf buried the final goal of the night. Klenzendorf and Rowen both ended up with two goals at the final horn.
This special nigh also consisted of a ceremony honoring the five seniors on the team: Peter Spitzer, Max Guida, Tim McIntyre, Dominic D’Angelo, and Carson Stone.
