Davis dominates Franklin 5-3

On Wed. April 24, the Davis High varsity softball team defeated the Franklin Wildcats in a league game 5-3.
At 4:15 in the afternoon, 13 girls huddled on the field, closest to the third base dug out. They slowly swayed side to side, a pre-game ritual. As they broke and took the field, sophomore Sarah Allen-Sutter walked to the circle and picked up the game ball: she was ready to pitch with a team of mainly older girls behind her.
Although Franklin seemed to keep a somewhat steady pace with her pitching, the defense behind Allen-Sutter was strong as ever. There were a few hits that they couldn’t stop however, and those are to be expected. Only 2 runs were let in the first inning though, and only 1 more over the span of the next 6 innings.
Despite the 2 runs scored by Franklin in the first inning, the devils fought backing, racking in 3 runs, and taking the lead. Junior Maddie Asta drove in 2 of those runs.
This is Asta’s first year on varsity, and is one of the starters for 3rd base. A lot of the team is new this year, with only 4 returning players from last year, after 6 graduated. The team dynamic is as good as ever though, according to Asta.
“I think we’re doing really well, because there is a wide range of ages. Whenever we have issues, we are really good at talking it out,” Asta said.
This dynamic can also been seen on the field, especially the infield. Senior Sydney Rosenblum had several plays, and had 3 solid hits during Wednesday’s game.
Junior Kaitlyn Lagattuta had 3 hits as well, one of them a double because it bounced over the home run fence.
Long time assistant coach David Reuben thought his team was playing well. “We’ve been hitting aggressively, and Sarah’s pitching great and we’ve been making the plays that matter.”
The team expects to take home the win again this coming Mon. April 29, in their next league game against Grant.
