Nine Davis High athletes qualify for state track and field meet

A total of nine Davis High athletes qualified to compete in the track and field state meet.
Paul Mohr, a senior who focuses on the 800m, broke the Davis High School record for the second time this year; with a time of 1:53.82. Mohr placed 15th overall. First place was awarded to Ivan Gonzalez from Ridgeview of Bakersfield with a time of 1:50.71. Mohr plans to run for UC Santa Barbra next year.
Fiona O’Keeffe, a freshman at Davis High, was one of the Blue Devil’s star athletes. She ran 10:59.76 in the 3,200m, placing 22nd in the most competitive high school track and field meet in California. O’Keeffe was less than 50 seconds off of first place, who went to Sarah Baxter from Simi Valley, with a time of 10:10.71.
Shot put thrower Nick Denton placed 13th, with a throw of 54-11. Denton plans to compete in the shot put for UC Santa Barbra next year. Nick Ponzio, a reigning champion from Great Oak in Temecula, placed first in the shot put with a throw of 66-02.5.
Senior Jack Scranton ran 4:32.27 in the 1,600m, finishing 16th in his preliminary heat. Scranton has been battling an injury throughout the season. “It wasn’t my best race of the season but it was a really fun year of track with the team” said Scranton when asked about his race. Scranton will be attending West Point Military Academy next year.
