In this year’s homecoming game, the Davis High J. team battled the Monterey Trail Mustangs to defend an early-season undefeated record.

After the dust settled, the Blue Devils emerged on top in a 35-14 win to add another victory to a streak of five.

The game was off to a quick start – both teams scored within five minutes of the kickoff at 5:00 in the afternoon on Oct. 11. Thanks to a successful 2-point conversion, however, the Mustangs finished the first quarter with an 8-7 lead.

In the second quarter, DHS pulled ahead briefly when tight end Tucker Fisk scored a 36-yard touchdown to make the score 14-8. Soon after, Monterey Trail ran in another touchdown but failed to make a 2-point conversion, tying the game up 14-14. A third touchdown from DHS running back Cole Morse ensured that the second quarter ended in the Blue Devil’s favor, 21-14.

The Mustangs did not score again for the rest of the game. In the fourth quarter with the score at 28-14, Tommy McTygue made the last Blue Devil touchdown after Jake Hammond recovered a fumble and helped DHS to win the game with a 21-point lead.

“As a team, we started slow – we were still waking up, but we picked it up in the second half,” said Fisk, who scored two of the JV team’s five touchdowns. Fisk said he believes the team is off to a good start, and that it will do well this year.

“In the end, they did what we wanted them to do,” said head coach Mike Satre of the team. “I was pleased that the team shook the dust off and pulled it together in the later quarters.”

Satre hopes for a good year with a good start. “We’re undefeated,” he said. “There’s not a much better start than that.”
