There was excitement in the air of the Davis High School gym; onlookers were anxiously waiting for the wrestling meet between DHS and Laguna Creek High School to start on Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.
Wrestlers warmed up for their matches by jump roping, jogging in place and practicing their moves. When the wrestling started, the coaches called out advice from the sideline and helped the wrestlers know what to do next.
The Blue Devils were ahead from the beginning and increasingly gained points throughout the meet. Early in the match, the Blue Devils were ahead with a score of 12-6. However, soon after, they were up by 11 points. At the end of the meet, the Devils won with the final score of 42-15.
A total of 14 wrestlers competed with only five losses. It was a victory for Davis that coach Ty Brown was proud of.
“It was a great team effort, and everyone went out there and did their job,” Brown said.
Junior Marquis Turner was very happy to have beaten Laguna Creek.
“We won our first dual meet against our rival team,” Turner said.
Sophomore Robbie Hughes was also pleased with the outcome of the meet. Although he didn’t get to wrestle himself because there was no one else in his age group, he supported his teammates that did.
“Ismeal had a good double take down and finished with a power up,” Hughes said. “And Quin Davis won quickly.”
Brown said that wrestling is a rough sport and that the meets are going to get harder. “We need to be on our game and ready to go,” Brown said.
