Sophomores as well as a few older students at Davis High recently completed the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE); students were disillusioned by their experiences. Every high school graduate must complete the exam by their senior year, and so students at DHS start taking it early, as many students are able to pass it their first time.

After the first day of the exam, sophomore Michael Ibrahim and Gabriel McKinney were tired after a long day of testing.

“I thought it was pointless. They should’ve let us leave after we finished,” Ibrahim said.

Sophomore Gabriel McKinney had similar feelings.

“I thought it was fairly easy for how important of a test it was. I didn’t study for it at all, but I felt pretty confident about my results,” McKinney said.

When asked if they thought they would pass, both of them unanimously answered “yes” with stifled chuckles.

For last year’s CAHSEE, 96 percent of DHS students taking the exam passed, according to the California Department of Education , most of which were sophomores.

Sophomore Isabel Realyvasquez felt that although she had lots of time left after taking the test, she was able to put her time to good use.

“I finished each section in less than an hour, which meant I had a ton of free time to draw and do other homework. I even wrote a whole essay for my English class in the spare time. I guess it was a good use of time for a study hall,” Realyvasquez said.

Regardless of student’s disenchantment with the exam, it is behind them now and so the only thing left to do is wait for scores to come.

“I’m just glad it’s over and done with,” Realyvasquez said.
