The much anticipated homecoming football game is coming up fast against the powerful Elk Grove Thundering Herd who is 3-0 while Davis is 1-2. The Blue Devil’s first win in Stockton last week against Edison High School provides a huge boost for the Devils’ spirits, giving them the momentum they need to carry out a competitive game this Friday.
While some odds are against the Devils, including the recent injury of quarterback Quinn Williams, “Davis has shown remarkable heart under first-year coach John Wiley,” Enterprise sports writer Bruce Gallaudet said.
Even freshman and first year varsity player Jack Hoal recognizes the Devils’ strengths.
“Our team has a huge heart! And everybody puts in effort every play. Some key things are our running game and strong defense,” Hoal said.
Heart and good defense is what the Blue Devils will need most against Elk Grove’s talented quarterback Tyler Vander Waal, and the senior linebacker/running back Spencer Sheff. While the Thundering Herd has a stacked lineup, Davis also has some notable players.
“Elk Grove is going to run the ball a lot, so a matchup to watch is DHS linebackers Wally Perez and Ish Perez against Sheff,” DHS football beat writer Tomas Oide said.
Of the past 8 matches against Elk Grove, the Blue Devils were not able to come up with a win. Devils might still have a change, however.
“…but remember, a few of those games have been pretty close and this could be the year the Devils get over the hump,” Enterprise sports editor Chris Saur said.
