The Davis High women’s golf team defeated Franklin by a score of 223-238 on Thursday, Oct. 2 at El Macero Country Club in Davis.
The Devils beat Franklin by a narrow margin, only prevailing by 15 strokes, but they showed a strong performance overall.
According to coach Rhonda Mohr, the DHS squad played well even with some difficult conditions. “The course isn’t in excellent condition…The greens were just aerated and if you just happen to hit it wrong it could go off target,” she said.
The Blue Devils’ top six all played well, as Emily Masiel shot a 38 to lead the team. River Xiang finished with a 43, closely followed by Marie Dean, who had a strong 44. Casey Harris shot a 48, and Madison Green rounded out the top five with a 50. Anna Belenis had a 55 on the day that was cancelled out in her first competitive match for the Blue Devils.
Masiel was confident in her showing, given the conditions. “I played okay, considering how the course was. My approach shots were mostly straight and on point,” she said. “I played consistently, and all of my drives were straight.”
The Devils had a great showing on the day, and Coach Mohr thought that her team was especially good at matching up and winning their individual battles. “We matched up our scores against our opponents and that’s what wins tournaments in the end,” Mohr said.
Franklin couldn’t quite pull out the win, but they surely gave their best effort. “The other team putted really well, I was neck and neck with my opponent until the sixth hole, but she kept on sinking some long putts,” Masiel said.
The Devils play next against Pleasant Grove El Macero in what is expected to be a good match between two of the better teams in their league.
