The Davis High women’s water polo team defeated the Tokay Tigers with a score of 12-3 on Oct. 6. The win was crucial in securing the second seed in the section.
At the start of the game, Davis attacked. Racking up four points in a matter of minutes. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 4-0 suggesting the beginning of a Blue Devil victory.
Devil’s goalie Katrina Sturm stood out, blocking a shot from the 5 meter line and only letting 3 shots slip by her. “The game was ok. Actually yah, I guess I’m happy with how it turned out,” Sturm said.
“The most memorable moment for me was when Katrina blocked a 5 meter shot, while everyone else went for offense. It’s a mental game and she did it well,” coach Doug Wright said.
“I saw a lot of good stuff from the players” said Wright and the girls agreed.
In the first quarter Davis’ Kendall Doten was ejected for misconduct, but that didn’t stop her from jumping back in the pool after her 20 second penalty and playing with just as much intensity as before.
Junior Megan Fleming accomplished a rare feat. “I scored a lob shot, something I can never do,” said Fleming “but you’ve got to think you can always do better.”
The Blue Devils could face the Tigers again in sections so they used this game to learn about their opponents. “I want to go into sections with no surprises,” said Wright.
Wright and the team noted that the in a future meeting, the player to look our for would be Tigers’ senior Sophie Connelly. “She’s a good shooter and a lefty, so she’s a tough person to deal with defensively,” said Sturm.
