The Davis High club Freedom From Hunger is holding a week-long shoe drive starting Wednesday, Oct. 22, and will collect the shoes in L-21
According to club vice president junior Fiona O’Keeffe, Freedom From Hunger is a “non-profit organization that works to provide women and their families with financial opportunities in the developing world through giving micro-loans to female entrepreneurs.”
“As a club, our goal is to raise funds for the organization and help those in our community who are in poverty,” O’Keeffe said.
Freedom From Hunger utilizes different fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for their organization.
This week’s shoe drive will benefit a different group than the normal recipients of the club’s charity, according to club president senior Jeanne-Marie McPherson.
“The shoes we get will be given to Shoes for Sacramento; it is not related to the Freedom From Hunger Organization but is something we wanted to do as a club to help people within our community because we end up focusing on people from other countries [for] most of the year,” McPherson said.
Students who donate a pair of shoes will receive a free bagel from Noah’s Bagels, and can also receive California Scholastic Federation (CSF), National Honor Society (NHS) and Key Club volunteer hour credit.
Shoes can be dropped off in L-21 at any time from Oct 22 to 29, but students must donate the shoes in the morning before school on a Wednesday during that week in order to receive volunteer credit or bagels.
