The Davis High women’s volleyball team beat Napa High in four games on Thursday, Sept. 3, winning the fourth one in a close 26-24 to seal the victory.

Tied at 24-24, junior Mitra Varjavand smacked down the ball and scored the 25th point. Seconds later, Napa served a ball that flew outside the boundaries, and the Blue Devils won.

Napa scored in the first 10 seconds of the first match, but Davis High quickly made a comeback to tie the game 6-6 and won 25-19, thanks to senior Lily Purves’ serving, junior Karlie Kijanka’s spikes and Varjavand’s defense.

Davis jumped out to an early advantage in the second game, but within seven minutes the Indians stole the lead, 10-7. But led by strong play from junior Sam Moore, the Blue Devils came back and tied things up 21-21 before Napa won with the 25th point.

With multiple solid spikes from Kijanka, DHS easily took a win in the third game (25-16), which Varjavand attributed to the team’s chemistry.

“We really came together to show improvement from past losses,” Varjavand explained.

Game four began with the Indians again claiming the first point. But Davis came out hard and tied the game 7-7. For the next 10 minutes, the game went back and forth between the two skilled varsity teams until Varjavand made the key play.

Coach Julie Crawford thinks her team is working together fantastically and hopes to keep up the good efforts.

“This year, our preseason competition is more challenging. In the long run, I think it will make us better for leagues,” she said.
