Last season, the Davis High men’s lacrosse finished second in the Delta League and made it to the first round of the North Coast Section playoffs. This spring, the team is hoping for an even better result.
Luckily, the team did not graduate many seniors and is mainly composed of returning players–with the exception of a few old JV players who have been bumped up to varsity.
“I expect great things [this season],” head coach Nick Juri said. “A lot of guys coming back, a lot of guys are veterans on this team, and they know what it takes to win so I expect it to be very good.”
Having mainly returning players gives the team plenty of experience and skill.
“I think that our starters are much stronger than in year’s past,” junior Aidan Mager said. “From last year, we have not lost a ton of offensive guys and I think that is what will make us a better team this year.”
After losing the conference championship to Granite Bay the past two years, the Devils hope to finally conquer the Grizzlies.
The team hopes its unique two-goalie system, in which goalies Miles Hergot and sophomore Wade Matern switch out during halftime, will help this year’s title bid.
“That’s going to kind of confuse teams because they’re both solid goalies,” Juri said.
The team is determined to work hard and has high expectations.
“I think that as a team we won’t be happy with anything short of a conference championship,” Mager said. “This year we have the talent to go all the way and win the title.”
