The Davis High JV women’s volleyball team lost to Elk Grove 1-2 on Oct. 18 in their last match of the season. The Devils ended the Delta Valley Conference with seven wins and five losses,
During the first half of the first set the two teams were neck and neck at 13-13, but as the set went on DHS took the lead and won their first set 25-21.
“The first set of the match was most representative of our level of play throughout the season.” sophomore Veronika Edson said.
Sophomore Molly Mahoney earned several points with flawless serves throughout the first set.
“I think one of our strengths was the fight we put into each set of the match.” team captain Mahoney said.
During the first set, junior Elise Jacobson also led the team with numerous point-earning serves and kills.
In the second set Davis only briefly held the lead, after that Elk Grove took the lead.
Despite juniors Azalea Morris and Samantha Hendrix’s kills in the second set, Devils lost 11-25.
“I love how insanely energetic our team is. My teammates are the most encouraging and positive players you could ever want.” team captain and sophomore said.
Throughout the entire third set Davis High trailed behind Elk Grove. Although Johnson was able to earn some points for Davis High with serves, Elk Grove eventually won 15-6.
This loss came as a shock to many players and parents because DHS beat Elk Grove at an earlier game on Sept. 25.
“I expected us to win as we beat [Elk Grove] by a substantial amount last time we faced [them]. Needless to say, it came as a surprise to watch our lead dwindle because we are a strong team with the capability of easily defeating Elk Grove.” Edson said.
