The Davis High varsity field hockey team played Red Bluff High School on Oct. 28 for their second to last home game of the season.
Senior Isa De Bruijn scored the first goal of the game, gaining momentum for the Lady Blue Devils. Key blocks from seniors Gia Fanucchi and Ella Simmons strengthened the Devil defense, as the Spartans tried to score in the first half unsuccessfully.
By halftime, Davis led 2-0 with another goal. Simmons played aggressive offense, making progressive strides to get the ball towards the opposing goal.
“JV was up by two as well, in halftime, so we were like, ‘Okay, we gotta do that too, and score some more goals.’ So we did,” De Bruijn said.
Starting off the second half of the game, junior Amara Higgins scored a goal, against several Red Bluff defenders, causing the whole team to erupt in cheers. Fanucchi followed with her own score, and another point for Davis.
“It was really fun to see my team so excited,” Higgins said.
Fanucchi’s quick moves on defense and strategic passes allowed her teammates to make offensive plays and score more goals as well.
After a time-out from the Red Bluff team, the Spartans came out more aggressive and came close to scoring a few goals of their own. However, sophomore goalie, Lily Wierzbicki, blocked several shots, not letting anything get past her.
“It was definitely a good win. This game helped us gain momentum for our next few games,” Wierzbicki said.
The Blue Devils finished the game with a 5-0 win, with junior Gracie Hartsough scoring the final goal for Davis.
“We want to win with big numbers,” De Bruijn said.
The field hockey team will be facing off the Chico Panthers on Oct. 30 in their next home game and senior night.
