A crowd of local students gathered at noon on Sept. 24 in Central Park as a part of the world wide youth climate strike.
The idea for the strike came from #FridaysForFuture — an international, student-led movement for climate justice that has initiated several global climate strikes since its conception in Aug. 2018.
The theme of this strike was Uproot the System. According to the FridaysForFuture website, the intention of the strike was to bring awareness to the intersectional effects of climate change on different groups of people.
At the Davis climate strike, a group of approximately 75, all wearing masks, joined the global event to raise awareness for intersectional climate justice. Demonstrators held signs voicing their concerns and chanted words of encouragement and support for the strike.
Davis High junior and president of the DHS Activism Club Emily Haws helped organize the high school students’ participation in the strike.
“We need to pass laws in our local and national governments to help protect the environment and help stop our global temperature from rising,” Haws said.
DHS student Jared Umphress also attended the demonstration in support of the movement. “When you have people grouped up in large numbers supporting a cause you basically put pressure on our politicians to support climate mitigation measures,” Umphress said.
With support from the local community and the organizers of the strike, the protest had a significant turnout of DHS and UC Davis students alike.
