The Davis High women’s water polo team beat Oak Ridge High at River City, 19-4, on Nov. 4.
The win resulted in the advancement of the Blue Devils in the 2021 Sac-Joaquin playoffs.
The next stop for Davis will be the semifinals against St. Mary High on Nov. 9.
Despite feeling a slow start to the game, the team felt that they were able to take control. “Aggressive counter attacks motivated the players, turning the tide of the game,” junior Mackenzie Walker said.
The team recognizes what needs to change in order to succeed in the coming playoff matches.
“We need to communicate better on defense,” Walker said. “We are so focused on what we’re doing, we forget to communicate.”
The team’s head coach, Doug Wright, has been coaching at DHS for more than 26 years. Along with his players, he feels confident that the team is well prepared for the rest of the playoffs.
Looking forward to the rest of the season, Wright and the team have clear goals. The vision is to, “win 6 consecutive games. We won our first of those six today,” Wright said.
“We are starting to ramp up our practices […] and we are going to keep grinding, I’m pretty excited,” Walker said.
Davis is currently ranked third in California and has a win record of 25-3 for the season.
