In a thrilling first home game showdown, the Davis High School varsity football team faced off against the Del Campo Cougars, resulting in a hard-fought match that ended with a final score of 21-13 in favor of Del Campo.
The school spirit from the DHS student crowd was apparent, with many dressing in flannels and cowboy hats.
“I’m pumped! First home game of the season and we have some great energy from our student section,” DHS principal Dr. Geigle said.
The DHS football team would fall to an early 13-0 score at the end of the first quarter. However, the team had not given up hope and would score an early touchdown in the second quarter electrifying the crowd.
“The game has been so amazing and hype!” senior cheerleader Jessyca Soto-Hernandez said. “We (cheerleaders) are so happy to be on the field and cheering on the team with the student section.”
Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, Del Campo would respond to the touchdown with another 8 points in the second quarter, bringing the lead to 21-13 at the end of the first half.
“The first half has been super exciting,” sophomore Matthew Domingo said, “First home game was very fun, hanging out with friends and cheering on our team.”
The dance team would put on a great performance during the half-time show, as the Blue Devil football team would prepare for the second half.
Unlike the first half, the second half was rather quiet for both teams, as they both were unable to bring the ball to the endzone, though there were still close calls and buzz from the student section.
“I felt like there were a lot of improvements from last week,” junior receiver Sammy Sousa said, “Del Campo wasn’t a game we expected to lose, and it hurt to disappoint our fans at home, but we’re prepared for a comeback next week.”
