Davis High School held its yearly Back to School Night on September 14th. Back to School Night is an event where students’ parents show up to school to learn more about the school, curriculum, rules, and staff that will accompany their child for the next school year.
This event was held from 5 pm through 8 pm, with the programming beginning at 5:30. FFA provided food for the parents and staff at the top of the quad, which was widely appreciated by the people who attended.
Most of the teachers on campus spent a lot of time putting together what they were going to present to the parents in the short 10 minutes they had.
Math teacher Michael Wright said that he made a handout and slideshow to present to the parents, consisting of a guide on how to join Canvas, info on AP tests, information about himself, and a parent guide.
“I’m not nervous to welcome the new parents at DHS,” Wright said.
This is Anthony Vasquez’s 13th year teaching at DHS. Vasquez said that he is nervous about meeting the new parents this year. “People in my field scare me,” he said. “Talking to people around my age is very different from talking to students.”
Vasquez prepared to meet the new parents by showing them a slideshow that introduced himself, showed a preview of the class, showed how to access the syllabus, and an offer for parents to sign up to help support the PTA.
Other teachers took a different approach when greeting the parents. History teacher Jessica Rasler gave the parents an opportunity to ask what they would want to know about their child. Rasler also gave the parents a sheet to fill out after greeting her at the door.
Isaiah Dauphine is a student-athlete at DHS. “Back to School Night is fun, inviting and overall a good time,” Dauphine said.
Dauphine’s parents have found the school very inviting and welcoming so far. Dauphine’s favorite part of the event was the great food.
Link Crew was at Back to School Night helping parents find the classes they needed to get to. Link Crew is a youth organization that helps support the students and their families of DHS. They ran back and forth all night, making sure every parent was where they needed to be. Link Crew member, Reem Lamsiah, loved helping out. “Helping parents find their classrooms is a lot of work but definitely worth it,” Lamsiah said.
