The Davis High men’s basketball team lost 70-56 to the Christian Brothers Falcons in the preseason Foundation Game, on Nov. 15.
Junior Kaleb Gee led the Blue Devils with 15 points. Senior Aidan Crawford and senior Jadyn Coaker finished with 14 points and 10 points respectively.
Christian Brother’s junior Shawn Underwood Jr. led all scorers with 19 points and was aided by junior Stephan Hewitt’s 15 points.
Davis kept the score close for the majority of the game, but continued to struggle to close the gap. However, at the end of the third quarter, a three-pointer by Gee cut the deficit down to five.
Davis started the fourth quarter on a roll, and quickly tied up the game thanks to two quick scores by senior Evan Bledsoe and senior Derek Barker. Gee’s third triple of the night gave the Blue Devils their first lead since the first quarter, 53-50.
Unfortunately, their lead quickly evaporated.
“First game, we’re so excited to try to show our home crowd what we’ve worked on, and everybody tried to do too much,” head Coach Stephen Smith said.
Davis failed to convert an easy fastbreak opportunity, and turned the ball over, killing their momentum. More turnovers led to transition points for Christian Brothers, and they quickly regained control. The Falcons closed out the game with a 14-3 run.
“We just got a little too excited and we didn’t close it out in those last five minutes, So I think we need to discipline ourselves to play it through the last five minutes,” senior Alden Mccabe said.
The Blue Devils also struggled with foul trouble throughout the game. Mccabe, whose defense was crucial for the team, finished with five fouls.
“It was tough, because there were a lot of foul calls, and I was in and out the whole game, but, you know, I gotta be more conscious of what the [referees] are calling,” Maccabe said. “They’re calling a lot of screen fouls. So, [I’ve] just got to play smart.”
Despite the loss, Smith was proud of his team’s hustle. “Very high effort,” Smith said. “This group I have, I know any gym I walk into, that they’re gonna give me 100%. I’m not one of those 110% guys. I’m a math guy, so I can’t help it.”
Smith was encouraged by his team and believes they will build off of this game.
“We’re going to be good,” Smith said. “We tried to do everything ourselves, which is normal when you’re excited and you want to show everybody what you’ve done. But these are adjustments that are easy for us to make and we’ll play better.”
