DHS varsity flag football fell to Dixon High in the season opener on August 27th. Unlike last year’s opener against Dixon, which the Blue Devils won 24-6, DHS was unable to secure a victory against Dixon.
As the game began, Dixon logged their first of six touchdowns on their opening possession during the 4th down.
Davis was missing a key player, sophomore quarterback Landry Clark, who fractured her wrist and had to watch and support her team from the sidelines.
In Clark’s place, senior Pearline Qin stepped up and played her first game as quarterback against Dixon.
Qin contributed various exceptional offensive plays, including connecting multiple tough passes to senior Amber Malik.
On the defensive end, Davis was hustling. In the first two plays of the game, junior Sonia Clayton pulled the flags of two Dixon players and contributed to shutting down Dixon’s offense throughout the game.
Junior Seneca Wattanapanich also starred on the defensive end with an interception right before halftime.
Although DHS didn’t get the outcome they hoped for, the team huddled together after the game and cheered on their way out. The team is still hoping to find a spark on both ends in the next game.
Davis is looking to improve before their matchup against McClatchy High School next Tuesday. “(The next step is) learning what our girls can do well and then adjusting our strategy to be able to compete with teams that have good athletes,” assistant coach Geoff Hulbert said.
