On Monday, August 27, Davis won the first field hockey home game of the school year against Corning Union High in a dominant performance.
Davis brought the intensity early, scoring three goals in the first quarter.
Following the first break, Corning was awarded possession but was quickly shut down by the Blue Devils’ defense. The counterattack led to a tap-in goal after a high shot bounced off the opposing goalkeeper’s arm pad.
As the Blue Devils’ offense rallied toward the goal, every possession seemed to result in another score, and by halftime, Davis led six to nothing.
Eight minutes after the half, Davis was awarded a penalty. The offense huddled at the top of the circle, devising a play to score again. After two passes misdirected the defense, junior Sofia Garcia was left with an open shot just feet from the goal and scored, lengthening the lead to 7.
Keeping the pressure on, the Devils slammed in three more goals in the second half and won, sweeping Corning 10-0.
Last season, field hockey lost its 75-game win streak that started in 2017. “I, as a coach, did a regroup and realized that our fitness wasn’t strong enough last year,” coach Beth Hogan said.
“We increased the fitness expectation coming into tryouts, and they all met it, which was awesome,” Hogan said.
