Chants filled the Davis High South gym as the crowd cheered in support for the women’s varsity volleyball team against their rival St. Francis on Monday Sept. 30.

“It felt great playing in front of a big crowd tonight…I think it motivated us to play well,” senior Valerie Cole said.

Even though the Blue Devils lost, they played a tight game. St. Francis won the first two sets by just two points, winning the first 26-24 and the second 25-23.

The game was a competitive battle, being tied up seven different times in the first set and 11 times in the second.

Each team had their runs. After the Troubadours took control in the middle of the first set they were just a point away from winning, up 24-19. Junior Isabella Garma-Murphy held St. Francis off as she went up to serve, bringing Davis back into the game by serving five aces in a row.

“I was nervous to serve… [but] I knew my team was going to support me no matter the outcome,” Garma-Murphy said.

The impressive stretch of serves led to a tied game, however St. Francis scored the next two points to win the set.

After a close first two sets, Davis played hard but lost the third set 25-21. The players supported each other throughout the game by coming to a huddle after each point to celebrate or discuss what to fix next.
