Davis High’s women’s varsity tennis team defeated Folsom this Monday, August 9 with a crushing score of 7-2.
Rallying through the glaring heat from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Davis excelled against its opponents winning nearly 78% of the total matches. The doubles teams won all of their matches with scores of 6-1 to 6-4. The singles players won two-thirds of their matches with scores spanning from 6-0 to 7-6. With 4 singles wins and 3 doubles wins, Davis emerged out of the game with a 5 point gap victory.
Due to the league switch to Sierra Foothill League amongst all sports, this was the first time Davis had ever played Folsom. “I was very nervous because it was a team we never played,” junior Inkyung Hwang said.
With no practice after cancellations all of last week due to the intense heat, the girls went in with little preparation, but are thriving in the new league.
“The team is still really strong,” junior Lea Lamoureux said. “I feel good about the season and I think our team will be able to handle being in a better league.”
A great number of the team last year had been seniors who have now long graduated. Many of the repeating players are adjusting to a new team dynamic. “I think the team is very different from last year because we lost so many players.” Lamoureux said.
“However, this match has shown that our young players can handle playing really good teams with no issues, and I have high hopes for the season,” Lamoureux said.
