In a comeback victory, Davis High’s men’s water polo team defeated league opponent Granite Bay High School 16-11 on Oct. 9. This victory propelled the Blue Devils ahead of Granite Bay in the league, putting them in 3rd place.
Even though DHS prevailed, they had a rocky start.
Davis was down 4-2 by the end of the first quarter, and Granite Bay increased their lead to 3 goals early into the second quarter. Granite Bay retained the lead until midway through the 3rd quarter.
At halftime, coach Tracy Stapleton told the team that they were “having the opportunities, but…need to put them away.” The players took this advice to heart.
The third quarter was a turning point in the game. “We…forced shots on the outside from their not so great players, countered hard and put our shots away, ” senior Blake Fuchslin said.
Fuchslin scored the first of a flurry of goals by the Blue Devils in the third quarter.
In less than five minutes, DHS turned a three-goal deficit into a three-goal lead. The Blue Devils not only held onto the lead but extended it to five goals by the end of the game.
Through his attacking threat, Fuchslin was critical in Davis’ victory, scoring eight goals. Seniors Harald Tollerup and Alex Erickson led the team in assists, each picking up three.
In the defensive end, junior Shuzhi Zheng made 5 saves. “Our goalie… came up big in crucial situations,” Stapleton said.
