Davis High’s women’s varsity water polo team played a fierce game against Rio Americano on Thursday, Oct. 10. The game was a pink out in honor of late Davis High player Heather West, who battled cancer.

“It’s always emotional. Heather was just this really special person,” coach Jamey Wright said. He coached West’s first water polo game at DHS.

After a touching opening speech about West’s legacy from former women’s water polo coach Doug Wright, sophomore Jessie Walker scored the first goal of the night with an assist from freshman Hilde McConnell.

At the half, Davis held a strong lead up 8-0.

The Blue Devils remained aggressive in defense throughout the night, pressing the opposing team, and sophomore goalie Hazel Beatty blocked every attempted goal made by the Raiders. “I think I had some good blocks, we had a shutout, so that was good,” Beatty said.

Closing out the remaining few seconds of the last quarter, Davis continued to prevent Granite Bay from gaining possession of the ball.

The team made quick passes and strategic goals until the end, winning the game 15-0.

“Tonight was a really big game for the team,” senior Sabrina Israel said. “We played at our best to honor Heather and all that she did for our community.”
