The Davis High women’s varsity tennis team lost to Oak Ridge 4-5 in a nail-biting match on Thursday, Oct. 17.

Despite the loss, the players’ team spirit shone through during Senior Night, as they celebrated their leader, Hannah Proctor, who has been the team’s number one player since her sophomore year.

Proctor played against Oak Ridge’s number one Ria Gandhi, in a singles match.

Proctor started off strong, prevailing in the first game. After a series of long rallies, Proctor won the first set with a drop shot to the net.

Proctor inaugurated the second set, defeating Gandhi in the first game. Proctor aced Gandhi in subsequent games, gaining a point with just her serve.

Gandhi played with an injured shoulder, which rendered her unable to serve overhand. “I feel that it gave me an unfair advantage,” Proctor said.

Proctor’s teammate, junior Afreen Islam, credits Proctor’s victory to “remaining consistent” and “playing tactfully.”

This is the team’s first season in the Sierra Foothill League. “It’s very competitive and challenging, and we’re in second place. So we feel good about it,” coach Sally Hosley said.

Proctor said that the season in the new league has been “exhausting, fun and hilarious.”

“Hannah’s done so great,” Holsey said. “These last three weeks she’s had amazing wins. Not only is she a really good player, but she’s a really good teammate.”

“It’s bittersweet,” Proctor said. “It’s been going by so fast.”
