Davis High’s men’s varsity basketball put up a strong fight against Laguna Creek High School on Dec. 3.
The first quarter began slowly, the scoreboard was empty for nearly five minutes. After Laguna Creek scored the first point, the teams began trading baskets.
Senior Kaleb Gee and captain junior Elijah Shweky each had two three-pointers. Gee was the star shooter of the game, scoring 14 points in total.
Davis fell behind multiple times in the second half, but managed to claw their way back. “It was a team effort to continue to fight back into the game,” head coach Stephen Smith said.
A huge help to their cause was Jamie MacDonald and his rebounds. His defensive rebounds helped continually turn over the ball to the Devils throughout the gane.
“I try and fill any hole we have, with whatever lineup we have, (…) usually that’s rebounding,” MacDonald said.
He noted Laguna Creek’s offensive rebounding strategies. “They got a lot of offensive rebounds because (we didn’t box out), so going forward I think we’re going to have to make sure we focus on that.”
Sophomore Rhys Crawford put up the final two points as the buzzer sounded, ending the game. Davis lost 53-47.
“We’re an inexperienced team, but we’re growing as we play,” Smith said. “Our mistakes come in our turnovers and mental mistakes.”
The team is looking ahead to get their first win of the season. “(We’re) very desperate and hungry to win,” Shweky said.
