DHS men’s varsity soccer dominated their rivals, the Jesuit High Marauders, 4-1 on Jan. 17.
Entering the match, the Blue Devils were tied for second in the league with only two losses from their eight games played.
In the first half, Davis controlled the ball but struggled to convert on their opportunities. Midway through, the Marauders scored on a counterattack and held the score at 1-0 for the rest of the half.
Davis entered the second half with renewed energy. Just 5 minutes in, senior Mario Romero, assisted by corner kicks from both flags, scored two consecutive goals, putting the Devils in the lead 2-1.
“I think going one-nil down in the first half killed our confidence, so my goal just gave us more momentum,” Romero said. “And the second one just added to that.”
Within the next ten minutes of play, another goal was scored by senior Josh Morris, who dribbled past multiple defenders and slotted the ball right where the opposing goalkeeper couldn’t save it, expanding the lead 3-1 for DHS.
Freshman Cruz Gonzales scored the match’s final goal in the 70th minute during his varsity debut.
Gonzales’s goal secured the Devils 4-1 victory. “I beat the last defender and heard all of the cheering and just knew I was going to score,” Gonzales said.
DHS is now tied for first in the league after nine matches.
