Davis varsity softball defeated the Wood Wildcats 13-4 in their season opener on Feb. 13.
The Devils came out strong, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The second inning was scoreless, but both teams managed to score a run in the third, making it 3-1 in favor of Davis.
Davis came out ready to hit in the fourth inning, scoring ten runs to bring the score to 13-1. Freshman Gracie Martinez hit a grand slam, clearing the bases and scoring the last four runs of the inning.
The Wildcats scored three runs in the fifth inning, attempting to close the Devil’s huge lead.
The umpires decided to call the game early after the fifth inning, due to the darkness on the field from a lack of lighting. This secured Davis’s first win of the season.
Head coach Tyler Gibson was happy with how the team performed with limited practices. “We basically only got three or four days of practice with the rain, so I didn’t really know what to expect,” Gibson said.
The Devils are a relatively young team with five freshmen and six sophomores. “It will be exciting to see how they handle things this year,” Gibson said.
Junior Sofia Lester, one of the few older players on the team, is really happy with the way the squad is looking. “I think we have a good chance of the playoffs again this year,” Lester said.
