Davis men’s varsity basketball fell 78-57 to the Jesuit Marauders on the team’s senior night and final game of the season on Feb. 14.
A ceremony was held prior to the game to commemorate the six seniors on the team. The stands were packed with students and parents alike spectating the event. “Everyone came out to support and it felt really good,” senior guard Jordan McMurray said.
Unlike Davis, the Marauders hit the floor running. At the end of the first quarter, Jesuit was dominating 22-9.
The second quarter was a different story as the Blue Devils outscored the opposition. Despite 4 3-pointers in a row from McMurray, sophomore William Doughty, and junior Jackson Thomas in the middle of the period, Jesuit led the Blue Devils by 12.
The 3-pointers kept splashing in for both teams in the third quarter, but Jesuit was able to increase its lead to 21 points. The Marauders’ Amaury Mckinney had a dominant 3rd quarter, scoring 15 of the team’s 26 points.
The Blue Devils continued to trail Jesuit by 21 points in the fourth quarter, and the game ended 78-57.
Davis had many successful passing sequences throughout the game. “We were getting all our teammates the ball, and it got us in a little groove,” McMurray said. But when the team lost the ball, Jesuit quickly countered and scored off fast breaks.
Despite the defeat, head coach Stephen Smith was positive about his players’ efforts. “They played hard; they played with joy; (they) played with passion. That’s all I’ve asked.”
