The DHS Gay Straight Alliance Club is preparing for the Day of Silence, welcoming all students of DHS to support the event on April 15.

The GSA club members have a table out in the quad all this week during lunch for students to sign up to participate.

According to the GSA supervisor Bill Wheeler, the Day of Silence has occurred annually for 12 years at DHS. Wheeler said the Day of Silence is important because “It brings attention to those whose voices are not heard.”

One club member who helps run the Day of Silence stand is senior Celeste Knight, who is the GSA vice president and an active member of GSA for 6 years.

“It’s important to me to see tolerance and acceptance,” Knight said. She will stay silent on Friday to bring awareness to the people who otherwise do not accept or tolerate people with different sexual preferences.

To increase participation, Knight said the GSA club is planning a party for all participants at the end of the Day of Silence. They also plan to reach out to Facebook and raise awareness of the day. More information about the event is available on the announcements and on posters around the school

Students who sign up for Day of Silence can create arm bands to wear on the actual day of the event or wear pins to support the event.

“I encourage everyone to check it out and support the cause,” Knight said.
