HUB staff wins awards
Nearly four thousand high school journalists gathered in Anaheim last week for the spring convention held by the National Scholastic Press Association and Journalism Education Association. The HUB and its staff were honored with many awards for its website, newspaper, radio reports and graphic design.
Bluedevilhub.com won the 2011 Online Pacemaker, which recognizes excellence in online publications, putting it in a select group of the top 18 scholastic websites in the country. The HUB newspaper was also awarded fifth place in the Best of Show Award for newspapers of similar size, jumping three places from the 2010 convention when The HUB placed eighth.
Along with the Pacemaker and Best in Show awards, student journalists were recognized for their work in on-site Write-Off Contests.
Sophomores Anna Sturla (review writing) and Grace Calhoun (podcast), along with juniors Madison Delmendo (editorial), Chloe Kim (editing) and Kelly Goss (feature writing), all received “excellent” ratings for their work. Sophomore Daniel Tutt and senior Kayla McCarty received “honorable mentions” for their work in newswriting and newspaper layout respectively.
Kelly Goss, HUB copy editor, also recently found out that she won the California Al Neuharth Free Spirit scholarship. The scholarship judges award one scholarship of $1000 to a female and male student from each state and the District of Columbia. Students receive a free week long trip to Washington, D.C., and compete to win one $50,000 scholarship.
She received the news over a voice mail from her mother while attending the journalism convention in Anaheim on Friday.
