DHS students offer advice for lunch time situations
On an average day, DHS students spend six to seven hours in school, and it is common knowledge that most DHS students cherish their 49 minutes of lunch the most. Lunch is a time for students to unwind and take a break from the stresses of class. But no lunch is the same another, and DHS students are prepared for all of these unique lunch situations.
When trying to save money, junior Natalie Serdahl will “Always hit up Subway. You can get a foot-long sandwich for just five bucks there.” There are a total of five Subways in Davis. Serdahl said she always goes to the Subway at University Mall because “There’s less traffic going that direction and it’s really close.”
Unlike Serdahl, junior Reid Blankinship cares little for how much money he spends on his lunch break; he just wants to feed his appetite.
“When I’m really hungry I always go to the Taqueria next to Savemart,” Blankinship said. “They give massive portions. And you can get as many chips as you want for free.”
Taqueria Guadalajara is located in the Lucky Shopping Center on the corner or Covell Blvd. and Anderson Rd.
On a lunch date, everything must be perfect, and junior Steven Orr knows exactly how to make it that way.
“When I take my girlfriend out to lunch, we usually go cook food at my house.” Orr said, “But if we’re not at my house, I always take her out to Steve’s Pizza and Grill.” Orr says Steve’s is the best for dates because of the cheap but quality food, and because of how private the booths are. “It’s a really nice place to just sit down and have a conversation in because you feel like it’s just you two in the room.” Orr said. Steve’s Pizza and Grill, now The Original Steve’s, is located downtown on 314 F Street across the Bank of America parking lot.
A giant line to the register is every DHS student’s worst nightmare. Waiting in line not only makes you wait longer for your food, but can cause you to be late to class; and nobody wants a tardy on their record. “That’s why I almost always go to 3rd and U,” junior Kevin Sorensen said, “I love 3rd and U because nobody knows about it. I’ve had to wait in a line there probably about two times, and the food is delicious.” 3rd and U is a small restaurant and cafe located on the corner of 3rd Street and University Ave. on the UC Davis campus. “No one knows about it ‘cause no one ever thinks to go on the UCD to campus for food. It’s great I’ll be going there at least once a week for the rest of my time at DHS,” said Sorensen, “I guess my secret’s out now though.”
Whether you’re trying to save money, impress your date, skip the line or just stuff your face, DHS is close to a huge variety of restaurants that are perfect for any situation.
