DHS varsity football player Jacob Schroeder felt confident in his team before the Blue Devils and Pacers would meet at 7:15 p.m. on Ron and Mary Brown Stadium on Friday, October 21.

“It’s definitely going to be a fight,” Schroeder said. “We have a lot more players and I think we are ready.”

Despite the high spirit and confidence displayed by the Devils, DHS lost to Grant 0-58 in the third Delta Valley Conference game for both schools.

Shaq Thompson scored three touchdowns and scored on a 60-yard run for the Pacers. In the second quarter, Shayne Reagan, the DHS quarterback, fumbled the ball and it skipped all the way to the end zone, where Grant retrieved the ball and scored.

Adam King, was within reach of a 37-yard catch in the second quarter that could have helped the Blue Devils score, but was ruled as an incomplete pass.

At the end of the second quarter, DHS was losing 0-37, but the crowd seemed cheerful during halftime. The junior Blue Devils and extra cheerleaders helped keep the audience spirited and hopeful.

In last year’s match-up DHS lost to Grant 0-56. The loses make a statement that DHS (2-5, 0-3) needs to improve both offensively and defensively to beat the Pacers (5-3, 2-1).

“I thought that [the Pacers] were just a great team […] and they were strong,” said DHS varsity football player Jake Ferrera. In comparison with the other DVC teams, Grant has the heaviest singleton player weighing at 365 lbs, but DHS has the heaviest average weight, at 200.1 lbs. “We just need to fix the details a little better and work on our defense.”

The DHS varsity football team has only two more games, at Elk Grove and Monterey Trail, to get their act together before the end of the season.
