SAT, nail it or fail it
Many colleges look to the SAT, which is available about once every month at DHS, to judge the knowledge of students. For juniors, the SAT is often considered a necessity.
Junior Sugal Sutter, 16, spent two weeks during the summer studying for the SAT by looking through SAT study books. Despite his studying, Sutter says, “I’m not ready.”
Junior Charles Wagoner, 16, has prepared for the SAT through study books and practice exams. Wagner feels ready to take the SAT.
The Kaplan Test Prep book has prepared students for the SAT since 1946. “Students do better on a test if they go into it knowing three things: what’s on the test, how it’s structured and how to deal with it mentally,” said Kaplan Senior Communications Manager Russell Schaffer.
The Partners in Learning organization in Davis believes in preparation for the SAT. The director, Johanna Buckels, says she even had an 8th succeed on the SAT because of preparation through Partners in Learning. The 8th grader had the goal of getting at least 600 on each portion of the SAT. Because of preparation, the student achieved her goals.
“[Partners in Learning] philosophy is that tutoring is most effective,” Buckles said.
