Leggings as pants
On any given day the girls on the DHS campus strut the halls in their skintight leggings. Some wear just the leggings and a sweatshirt, others put a dress on top, some accessories with a long t-shirt and some boots, and let’s not forget about jeggings. Wearing leggings as pants has become popular with many teens.
It is not uncommon to see sophomores Francisca Echiburu and Daryn Kuhlman wear leggings to school. “You can wear (them) when it is hot and you are not dying of heat,” Echiburu said. Kuhlman wears them because “they are really comfortable and cozy.”
Dina Furman, owner and manager of Lily’s Boutique in downtown Davis considers leggings a “basic item.”
According to Furman, leggings are very popular for winter, especially with sweater dresses. Leggings are made of a material that is convenient, casual, and functional.
Although leggings are a hit to some, not everyone is a fan of the style.
Junior Laney Teaford and senior Bryce Vaesworn think wearing leggings are not meant for a school environment. According to Teaford, wearing leggings as a replacement for jeans is “not as presentable” and “not very professional”
Teaford runs for the DHS cross country team and thinks it is ok to wear leggings while you run because “it’s running, but it’s not like you would go out wearing a sports bra to school.”
Vaewsorn only wears leggings to dance in. “It is what you wear to dance,” Vaewsorn said.
Some students and teachers think girls wear leggings for reasons other than because they are comfortable.
Junior Grace Calhoun thought wearing leggings as pants was trendy at first but then every person had a pair of super tight leggings. “People claim they only wear them because they are comfortable…it’s like, come on, that is not the only reason you got them,” Calhoun said. “They make your butt and legs look really good”
“Either they want to show off or it looks really good with their outfit,” senior Carlie Gantar said.
Sophomore Kian Reno said girls think more boys will talk to them if they wear leggings.
Spanish teacher Amelia Hess would be “very upset” if one of her children wore just leggings as pants without a dress over the top. Hess considers leggings undergarments.
English teacher Janine Widman thinks when students wear only leggings as pants they are more concerned about getting attention then school work. According to Widman, too tight clothing has always been a fashion style wear people “push the envelope.”
