Tartuffe: An appetizer to Scotland
The DHS drama department is one step closer to its trip to Scotland. On March 18 drama put on its last production of Tartuffe,a preview of the play they will be preforming at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer in Scotland.
Dan Kryston, an old theater mentor, nominated the drama program to apply for the American High School Theatre Festival. Senior Christine Alexander, an actorand member of the DHS drama department, helped Mrs. Bruch put together the portfolio they sent in.
“This is going to be the first trip the drama department has ever taken, which is really exciting,” Alexander said. The festival is the largest art festival in the world and DHS is one of 50 high school elected to perform.
Because they are taking this performance overseas, they needed to have a production that did not require a set and could adapt to any stage. According to Alexander, Tartuffe was perfect because it focuses mainly on the interactions between actors and is more of a slapstick comedy.
DHS junior Megan Orr is on the drama board and is an actress in the play. “Of course I liked preforming it here, but preforming in Scotland is going to be amazing, it’s going to be pretty great,” Orr said.
The students’ performance brought in more money to fund their trip so far, the department has fundraised $95,000 of the necessary $145,000 for its trip.
According to Orr, the show was a success. “We had great energy, a great cast, a fantastic set, we’re all really close, and the show went really smoothly,” she said.
The DHS Drama department’s next production, the musical A tribute to Tony Fields, will open on April 20.
