Students visit two Bay Area universities
On March 23, AVID students traveled to the Bay Area for two college trips.
The AVID class visited Saint Mary’s College and UC Berkeley.
At Saint Mary’s students were given a tour by two graduate students and a presentation by admissions officer, Pedro Ramirez, who gave them many tips on how to both apply and get accepted into the college. On the tour, students were shown campus housing, department buildings and the common eating hall. “We get a lot [of comments] that it looks like Hogwarts,” said tour guide and Saint Mary’s student, George Emmons of his school’s dining commons.
Later at Cal students were again given a tour around the campus. “ Sally [our tour guide] gave us a feel of the campus. Like, how it would be like to go to UC Berkeley,” said junior Bella Romero.
“[The trip] went really well, we were able to visit two relatively rigorous academic universities. They gave us great information […] we were able to get a full look at the learning and living environment offered,” AVID coordinator, James Curley said .
Student were back at DHS by 6 p.m. The class hopes to have a formal discussion comparing and contrasting both universities.
