April 24: Tony Fields’ memory celebrated within DHS Drama Department
Tony Fields was a Hollywood dancer, actor, choreographer, model, as well as a graduate of DHS. He passed away 17 years ago at age 36.
On Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21, the DHS Drama Department sought to honor this young man’s career, accomplishments, and memory through their annual production entitled, “What I did for Love – A Tribute to Tony Fields.”
“He was beyond talented and everybody knew and loved him,” DHS junior Laura Lavernia said.
“Tony Fields made it big in Hollywood and had an extremely successful career, but when he found out he was terminally ill, he chose to spend his last few months of quality life to help director Gwyneth Bruch at the DHS Drama Department,” Lavernia said. “He could have done anything, and that is where he chose to be.”
This year’s production memorialized Fields by revisiting some of the more significant works of his career. These include numbers from “Thriller,” “A Chorus Line,” “Solid Gold,” and “Oklahoma.” A total of 21 individual and unique performances were given.
“I have found that even though I didn’t know him personally, I feel connected to him,” Lavernia said, following Saturday’s final performance. “I feel as though he is largely responsible for the passion that is shared in the drama department as a whole, and that passion is what makes it so special.”
