Seniors join special graduation choir
Fifteen seniors crowded around music teacher William Zinn’s piano to audition to sing in the graduation choir.
A sign reading “Listen, Silent!” hangs above Zinn’s head. However, on this Wednesday lunch, the roles were switched. It was Zinns turn to listen to the students and silent was the last thing to describe these auditions.
Zinn started off the auditions by telling the singers to turn to page six and sing together around the piano as he plays. As Zinn played the notes, the seniors followed singing “see the west wind move like a lov-a.”
The group will be performing Sting’s famous number, “Field of Gold,” in front of about 2,000 people at the graduation ceremony on Friday, June 8.
Zinn did not eliminate singers after the auditions. Everyone who showed up is allowed to sing at graduation.
Senior Danielle Schickele, madrigals member, says that Zinn did this to make sure people were committed and could carry a tune. “I think it was fair because this is our senior song so everyone should be allowed to do it,” Schickele said.
Although all students were allowed to audition, most of the seniors in the group are no strangers to singing performances. The group is dominated by students like Schickele who participate in the jazz choir or madrigals.
“As a member of the madrigals and a singer, I thought it would be fun to sing one last time at graduation,” Schickele said.
