On Oct. 7 at 8 p.m., the soccer stadium bleachers were filled with a blue-flooded crowd of thrilled Blue Devils, parents, and at least 100 thick blankets as fans tried to handle the new cold temperatures. The Jesuit men’s varsity soccer team was paying the Devils a visit.

Although Jesuit walked off the field with a 4-0 victory, the Davis High men’s team put on a good show for the crowd. Sophomore D.J. Villegas got the crowd roaring only a couple minutes into the game with a sprint down the right wing, to then make his way towards the box and take a solid shot on goal with was blocked by the Jesuit keeper. Things were looking good.

However, Jesuit put a goal on the scoreboard with a penalty kick early in the first half. After that, another goal followed in the first half, and two more in the second half.

The Marauders have only lost one game so far this season, against a nationally ranked team, while the Blue Devils are now 7-3-4.

The two teams will most likely meet again the Sac Joaquin Section tournament. Despite the loss, the Davis High crowd stood behind its players throughout the entire 90 minutes, even reassuring them with the classic chant: “We’ve got girls!”

That’s not all we have. We have a men’s varsity soccer team that is going to prepare itself for another game against the Marauders, and come out strong when the time comes.

“The game was a great experience for the players who haven’t played in this historic game yet, so I can’t wait to see how we all play in our future games,” Villegas said.
