Davis High pulls a 2-0 win against Huntington Beach

The Davis High Blue Devils women’s varsity field hockey team continues to hold on to their winning streak.
Although it was not counted as an actual league game, the team proved their strength with a 2-0 win over Huntington Beach on Oct. 12.
The match against Huntington Beach was one of the four out-of-conference games the Devils will be playing this season. The game was meant to be a challenge because Huntington Beach is a top ranked team who placed second at this years Cal Cup.
According to Coach Sandie Marotti-Huckins, this victory was an important milestone.
“It was probably the toughest game we played all season,” Marotti-Huckins said.
With an aggressive start, DHS was able to drive the ball quickly up the field. Senior captain Kayla Robinson held Huntington tight in the mid-field, where Davis was able to control most of the game.
“It was probably one of our best games because of how well everyone worked together,” senior Kylie Drexel said.
Keeping Huntington’s defense exhausted, senior Emily Barber’s quick stick work and numerous shots drove DHS to their first goal. With a whack of her stick, junior Natalie Silver passed the ball through the defenders and clear to Barber who pushed it straight into the goal.
DHS wrapped up the first half with a 1-0 lead and continued to play strongly into the second half.
Davis wasted no time getting the ball back into the net again. On a short corner play, junior Sara Pinto drove toward the goal and with a strong push Pinto passed the ball to junior Kelly Ragsdale who tapped it into the back of the goal.
Despite two almost-goals by Huntington Beach towards the end of the second half, DHS still owned their home field. Junior goalkeeper Ally Weir stood strong and blocked both shots with only 17 seconds remaining.
The win meant a lot to the team and will set the standards for their harder games coming up.
“This was like our play-off and we wanted to come out strong and continue strong into the next week,” senior Malia Fugisawa said.
The varsity field hockey team hopes to keep the winning streak going with another victory in their next game against Yuba City on Oct. 17.
