Women’s basketball defeats Franklin, eighth win in league
Ashleigh Vandenbrink gets the pass from half-court, turns, and runs, Franklin defenders a couple feet behind and not able to catch up. She gets to the basket and lands the easy layup which won her team its second two points of the game and set the tone for the Devils’ first half.
The varsity women’s basketball team pulled out their eighth win of the league, defeating the Franklin Wildcats 45-37 in the Feb. 8 home game. The game puts them at 8 and 1 to win the Delta Valley Championship and secure a high seat in the playoffs.
“We win our DVC,” head coach Karen Foster said. “And, now well get at least a fifth or sixth seat for playoffs and we will have two home games. That will be nice.”
In a relatively low-scoring game, the Devils grabbed a ten-point lead in the first half and didn’t lose it until the last three minutes.
Fouls, particularly Franklin’s five in the third quarter, gave Davis High 12 free throw points to Franklin’s four, securing their 8-point lead.
“We kind of expected it to be a little flat because of all the emotions, and we have seven seniors who are special to us,” Foster said. “But we knew we had to do just enough to get the win.”
The game began with a ceremony recognizing this was the last Davis High league game for seven seniors on the team: Ashleigh Vandenbrink, Kylie Drexel, Becca Hassid, Tori Powell, Daisy McKim, Danika Carlisle and Maya Tarasenko.
But the energy of the game began with the foreshadowing Davis High chant, “Whose house? Our house.”
