At 6 p.m. Pacific time, Davis High’s varsity women’s lacrosse team squared off in its last home game against archrival St. Ignatius on May 10.
Led by senior captain Kylie Drexel, the Blue Devils were looking to end their season with a victory, but defeat was their prize.
In the two halves of the game, the female athletes fought fiercely, utilizing any means possible to win. This attitude of raw aggression dominated throughout the game. As a result, several penalties were called on each team and players were warned for their unsportsmanlike conduct. “They’re a very good team and it was definitely a hard-fought win for them,” coach Jenn Morris said.
Davis senior Lani Chang scored the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute of the first half. However, St. Ignatius was quick to score, launching a counter offensive and scoring with 19:10 to go. It was enough to keep the Blue Devils at bay, ending the first half with a one goal lead. “[St. Ignatius] is a solid team with a strong offense,” Morris said.
In an attempt to outscore St. Ignatius, seniors Kylie Drexel and Ceci Cajandig outmaneuvered their opposing guards and rushed the goal. This tactic proved effective enough to tie St. Ignatius with four minutes remaining in the game.
In spite of their agility and speed, the Davis girls were outclassed when St. Ignatius scored back to back goals, putting them ahead 14-2.
“I’m satisfied with the way I played and the way the team played. We couldn’t have asked for more from each other. We played solidly,” Cajandig said 15 minutes after the team’s defeat.
“Overall, I think we exploited their weaknesses for sure,” Morris said. “They do not have the speed or agility that [my] girls do.”
