Waves of potential student athletes came in and out of Sutter Davis, arriving with their parents and numerous school and health forms and leaving with a donut and the approval to play a high school sport. Saturday, June 1 from 8:30 to 11:30 was Sports Physical Day, an annual event hosted by the athletic department for the last five years.
“The purpose of the physical clinic day is to provide an opportunity for Davis athletes to get quality physicals prior to the 2013-2014 school year.” said athletic director Dennis Foster. “We hope to also raise funds for the athletic department.”
Athletic secretary Laurie Williams coordinates the event with Sutter Davis each year. She and Foster sat together to check in and welcome incoming students and their parents seeking a physical examination necessary to play on a Davis High School sports team in the fall. Williams and Foster collected forms, answered questions and sent the families on their way to their physical appointments.
Athletes of all types could be seen coming through the glass doors, whether their sport was volleyball, football or cross-country. The doors opened at 8:30 a.m. with an initial rush of students but generally slowing down throughout the day, with students “[coming] in waves all day long” said Williams. “It will be a little slow and then a big rush will come in.”
Doubling as a fundraiser for the athletic department, Sports Physical Day hopes to collect funds to offset the basic costs of the department, including the costs of officials for games.
