The DHS women’s varsity volleyball team beat Ponderosa High School in a close match on Thursday, Sept. 19.
All five sets were played, with the first ending in a score of 25 to 23, Ponderosa, the second 25 to 14, Devils, the third 25 to 18, Ponderosa, the fourth 25 to 14, Devils, and the fifth 15 to 8, Devils.
The Devils gained a lot of strength through their powerful hits, coming especially from junior Maya Gilardi and senior Zoe Hunt-Murray. However, it was still an incredibly close game and had the crowd sitting on the edge of their seats and cheering loudly whenever their team gained a point.
Coach Julie Crawford believes that the closeness of the scores was a result of DHS’ lack of aggression.
“We just were playing it too safe,” Crawford said. “As soon as I said ‘we’ve got to swing more aggressively,’ they started swinging away.”
The crowd erupted into cheers and yells when DHS scored the winning point in the fifth game. Junior Maya Gilardi was proud that her team came back and won in the end.
“We really showed our heart by coming in the fifth game,” Gilardi said. “It really shows we’re in shape, we’re ready to work, and we’re a passionate team.”
All in all, Crawford believes that the team has been having a successful season.
“I’m really proud of the girls,” Crawford said. “We’ve been getting better and better each time we step on the court.”
