This football season, new captains were chosen for JV and varsity cheerleading teams at Davis High. One of the JV cheer captains is sophomore Kathleen Pan.
Pan started out in gymnastics for five years; however, her chronic injury forced her to quit. After recovering, Pan played in the Davis Youth Softball Association (DYSA) for eight seasons.
Pan recalls watching the show “Make it or Break it” and how it made her miss being a gymnast.
“Watching the show made me miss being a gymnast, but gym isn’t really something you can just go back to. So, I sat down and thought: Okay, what is the closest thing to gymnastics? Cheerleading!” Pan said.
Pan tried out to be on the JV team as a freshman and made it on the team.
“I’ve started something and I’m not going to stop until I have to,” Pan said.
This year, Pan was voted to be a captain for the JV team. As a captain, she is responsible of organizing game time situations. Captains must also organize activities to do for the football team and show school spirit.
One of the biggest weeks in the football season that requires the most planning is homecoming week.
“Homecoming week is mostly stressful because there’s a lot our team has to do to prepare for the game, but it’s also the most exciting game of the season,” Pan said.
Pan hopes to continue with being on the cheer team throughout high school.
“I like being captain but it’s less likely for me to be captain next year because on varsity, the seniors get priority. I’d like to be a captain senior year but I would give the spot to someone else because there are many people who deserve to be captain,” Pan said.
